If your dog ever collapses, stops breathing, or becomes unresponsiveā¦
š would you know what to do?
Itās something no dog owner wants to think aboutābut knowing CPR could save your dogās life.
At Gemstone Bulldogges, we believe being a responsible dog owner goes beyond feeding and loving your dogā¦
Itās about being prepared when it matters most.
šØ When Should You Perform CPR on a Dog?
Dog CPR should ONLY be performed if your dog is:
ā Unconscious / unresponsive
ā Not breathing
ā Has no heartbeat or pulse
ā ļø If your dog is breathing or responsive, do NOT perform CPRāthis can cause harm.
š§ Step 1: Check for Breathing & Pulse
Before starting CPR:
āļø Look for chest movement
āļø Listen for breathing
āļø Check for a heartbeat (left side of chest behind elbow)
If there is no breathing and no heartbeat ā start CPR immediately.
š Step 2: Call Emergency Veterinary Care
š Call your vet or nearest emergency clinic immediately
If possible:
Put phone on speaker
Have someone else call while you begin CPR
š” CPR is a temporary life-saving measure, not a replacement for veterinary care.
š Step 3: Position Your Dog Correctly
Lay your dog on their right side
Extend the head and neck to open the airway
š” Important for Bulldogs & barrel-chested breeds:
They may respond better with compressions performed with the dog on their back due to chest shape.
ā¤ļø Step 4: Start Chest Compressions
This is the most critical step.
š Place your hands over the widest part of the chest
Compression guidelines:
100ā120 compressions per minute
Compress chest 1/3 to 1/2 depth
Keep a steady rhythm (think: āStayinā Aliveā beat)
š” For smaller dogs:
Use one hand instead of two
š¬ļø Step 5: Give Rescue Breaths
After compressions:
š Give 2 rescue breaths for every 30 compressions
How to:
Close your dogās mouth
Extend the neck
Place your mouth over the nose
Blow until you see the chest rise
š Step 6: Repeat Until Help Arrives
Continue: ā”ļø 30 compressions
ā”ļø 2 breaths
Repeat until: āļø Your dog starts breathing
āļø A heartbeat returns
āļø You reach veterinary care
ā ļø Important Things to Know
CPR success rates are lowābut it can buy critical time
Even if your dog responds, they still need immediate veterinary care
Stay calm and focusedāyour actions matter
