Free feeding from 8-12 weeks

Between 8–16 weeks, puppies go through one of the most intense biological growth phases of their entire life. This is not just general growth. Multiple major systems are developing at the same time, which creates a very high demand for energy and nutrients.

During this window, the brain is developing rapidly. Puppies are forming large numbers of neural connections that shape learning, emotional regulation, problem-solving, and social behavior. The brain requires a significant amount of energy to support this level of development, especially in the form of glucose and fats. This alone increases overall food intake.

At the same time, the skeletal system is growing quickly. Bones are lengthening, growth plates are active, and joints, ligaments, and tendons are forming. This stage lays the foundation for the dog’s long-term structure, movement, and joint health. Building this physical framework requires protein, minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, and other structural nutrients.

Muscle development and movement are also increasing. Puppies are learning to balance, run, climb, and coordinate their bodies. Their core strength and overall physical control are developing rapidly. All of this activity burns a large number of calories and contributes to increased hunger.

Puppies also have a higher metabolic rate than adult dogs. They process food more quickly, use energy faster, and experience drops in blood sugar more easily. Because of this, they often need to eat more frequently and may appear constantly hungry compared to adult dogs.

In addition, the immune system is developing during this time. Puppies are transitioning from relying on maternal antibodies to building their own immune defenses. This includes development of the gut microbiome and responses to environmental exposure and vaccinations. Supporting the immune system requires amino acids, fats, vitamins, and minerals, all of which increase nutritional demand.

This period is also a critical window for sensory and environmental development. Puppies are learning how to interpret the world around them, including new environments, sounds, surfaces, people, and experiences. Processing and adapting to these inputs requires mental energy, which further contributes to increased food needs.

The reason puppies eat more between 8–16 weeks than at any other time is because all of these systems are developing simultaneously. They are building the brain, the body, the immune system, and behavioral patterns all at once, while also actively learning from their environment.

No other stage of life combines this level of physical growth, neurological development, and environmental processing. As a result, their bodies require more energy and nutrients during this period than at any other time
