So you brought home your New Puppy

But now what?!?!

What do I feed my Puppy?

Currently your Puppy is on Victor high pro plus. After weeks of research, (and a few too many bags with bugs) I chose this company for its nutritional values as it contains beneficial nutrients, no fillers and real ingredients. When your puppy is with our animal behaviorist they are on Victor and also on Gentle Giant. Both are great options to keep them on and offer a little different ingredients.

We want this large breed to grow very slow, so their bones and joints don’t have too much weight on them as they mature which is why we don't feed a high protein puppy kibble.

Feel free to explore different foods but know the worst thing you can do is try to save money on the food and feed them something that upsets their digestive system or doesn’t have the nutrients needed for a growing a large breed dog - and also know that buying the most expensive is not the key either. Some foods may have too much protein and some, not enough. If you do switch foods, please make sure that you select another large breed all stages food (not puppy) And always, if you are switching food, make sure it is a gradual change. The puppies already go through so many changes going into a new home that upsetting their tummy might happen anyway due to nerves.

Being prepared with a few cans of pureed pumpkin to mix is a good idea- mix in their food in case diarrhea does occur. Please contact me with any questions.

Be proactive with parasites:

Use a black walnut tincture daily in a stainless steel bowl for a daily protection.

How much should I feed my puppy?

It's always a struggle to know how much to feed. Know this…you will not over feed these pups, but you can underfeed. I am a fan of free feeding once they are potty trained. But while potty training, I recommend feeding at least twice a day, if not 3 times. If you are feeding twice a day, I suggest starting with 1 cup. If he/she finishes without losing interest, add another ¾ cup. You want them to eat until they are full. They will walk away from it when they are not interested. While they are eating, be present and mess with the food and body parts, you don’t ever want them to become territorial over their food. So, reaching your hand in the bowl, petting them, picking them up and loving on them for a second before letting them go back to their food all helps develop your new pup into becoming an amazing dog for you and your family.

Potty training tips:

Usually as soon as the pup gets done eating they are looking for a spot to go and if you aren’t paying attention, it will be an accident on your floor. Sometimes it's easy for me setting an alarm quickly as we know we all get distracted easily. Life is just busy that way. Watch for signs of sniffing, knowing when they will potty and taking them out at those times will teach them your house rules. I recommend getting a training bill that hangs on a door. Place this bell on the door that you will take your puppy out most to use the bathroom. Every time you go out of that door ring the bell. Every time you take your puppy outside, ring the bell with their paw, if they have an accident in the house, do not yell or get frustrated…simply bring them to the bell, ring it with their paw and place on the grass. Dogs are very smart and learn by repetition and smell so this will be fast and painless if you are consistent.

When do I get my dog fixed?

It is in the contract that you the buyer and I the seller signed that the said dog must stay intact until a year of age. This is crucial to his or her development. I do suggest you wait longer, giving them ample time to use their growth hormones to develop. Early spay/neuter causes loss of bone mass and can increase your dogs’ risk of hip dysplasia and other joint and structure issues. Any breach of contract will void any and all health guarantees if you should have any structural issues. YOUR VET WILL TRY AND TELL YOU THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA…I ASSURE YOU IT IS ESPECIALLY IN THIS BREED…. TAKING THEIR GROWTH HORMONES TOO EARLY IS A BAD DECISION.

What should I do if my pup gets an upset stomach and has diarrhea?

PUMPKIN IS THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD!!! If at any time your dog gets an upset stomach give them some 100% canned pumpkin for a few days along with their food and you should see vast improvement. This also works for constipation. There are many probiotics on the market as well. That work really wonderful.

Are kennels inhumane? Should I use a kennel during training?

NO they are not inhumane and YES you should use them during training. I promise your pup will not hate you for it. In fact, puppies are just like human babies, they too can go down for a nap during the day in their safe space, the kennel. When you are home be sure to leave the kennel door open and allow your pup to go in and out freely. They should get to know the kennel as their place. If you have small children, make sure they know that the kennel is the dog’s home and if he/she goes in there they are to leave them alone – this is your pup asking for alone time. When kenneling, every dog is different, but one thing is the same…they should never be left in there with nothing to do. They should always have SAFE toys to help them pass the time. Plush toys or toys with squeakers are a NO NO, they can break them open and choke on parts, try a Nyla bone or a heavy rubber toy with frozen peanut butter inside. Also, right now they are so little they should not be kept for more than hours at a time. Once they hold it for hours you can gradually increase the time.

Now having said that you also don’t want your dog in the kennel more than they are out. So, if you kennel during the day while you are at work they should be out while you are home. Do not use the kennel as punishment, it sends mixed signals, try taking the place command instead.

Skin and nail care:

This breed can get some wrinkles on the face, those can be wiped with water wipes. Nails grow extremely fast; I recommend a nail grinder to trim nails. They are not overjoyed by it but when you are consistent, they grow used to the weekly trimming. In your pup go home kit you have a circle red or blue king treat mat. Stick that to the floor or bathtub wall with Kong treat or peanut butter, this will distract them while you are working with them. We do front nails weekly and back nails bi-weekly. Once your pup’s growth slows down their nails will as well. At that time, you can go to once a month trimmings. It is very important for the dog’s structure, joints and overall health to keep those nails trimmed. A dog walking around all day with long nails is like a person walking around all day inch high heels. YUCK & OUCH.Create another flyer like this one with this information sumed up.
